Psychological Solutions
reports on favourite childhood books for The Sun.
In early
2003 Psychological Solutions was commissioned by The Sun
newspaper to carry out some research into the types of books and
the authors that British adults had most liked when they were children.
The research was aimed at supporting The
Sun's successful 'Books for Schools Scheme'. Since its launch several
years ago, the Books for Schools Scheme has provided more than 200,000
free books to schools across the UK.
The Sun wanted to find out which authors and types
of book were most popular so that parents and teachers would have
some idea of which free books to choose from the Scheme. By selecting
books which were likely to be popular it was hoped that more children
could be encouraged to improve their skills through independent and
assisted reading.
The most popular childhood books were those which offered
an alternative to everyday life and which engaged the imagination.
Adventure stories were most the most popular genre, closely followed
by mystery and magic/fantasy books.
The most popular children's author overall was Enid
Blyton, with Roald Dahl, J. K. Rowling, C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkein
close behind.
The most popular characters from children's fiction
were Harry Potter, Peter Pan, Alice (in Wonderland) and Cinderella.
